As a flight surgeon in Japan supporting F-16 fighter pilots to her current position with Southwest Urology Associates, Dr. Alison Hanson has worked in male-dominated fields for most of her career. “Less than 2% of urologists are women, and most of them are in pediatric urology or only treat women,” says Dr. Hanson. “Although now a large percentage of my practice is women, I have many men tell me they prefer talking about these issues with me.”
After graduating from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Hanson completed urology training in New Orleans at Tulane University Medical Center. She honed her skills in the Air Force as both a flight surgeon and as a urologist, most recently serving as the Chief of Aeromedical Services for the New Mexico Air National Guard “Tacos.” She has since retired as a lieutenant colonel, and thus closing a distinguished military career. Since Dr. Hanson landed in the Duke City in 1994, she has steadily built a reputation as one of the best urology specialists in the state.
She practices general urology, treating urologic cancers, stone disease, infections, and prostate problems. She also treats voiding dysfunction, interstitial cystitis, and other bladder disorders, specializing in incontinence, and is well trained in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. She attributes the success of her practice to a direct approach to educating people about their disease or problem, and about the options and limitations of available treatments. “Many people come in asking about surgery when a medication, change in diet, or other intervention may be a better treatment for their problem.” Dr. Hanson is earned “Top Doc” honors from Albuquerque The Magazine multiple times in her tenure while practicing in Albuquerque and is happy to welcome patients into her practice.
